Christmas 2016: Gifts for a Bearded Bloke

Over the course of the year I've been inundated with various products to tame my mane (read beard) or just to get rid of it completely. There are a range of products, services and experiences that I would recommend, but rather than just re-hash things that I've already written about I've gone a little bit further and decided on a mash up of products. Some I've written about, some I've used and some stuff is just really cool. So, stuck for a gift idea for the bearded man in your life or for the bearded man in your life you no longer want to be bearded? Read on!

The Real Shaving Company
There are two little crackers (not literally crackers) from The Real Shaving Company. First up is the Shaving Brush Collection which at £9.99 from Boots here is well worth a look for those interested in taking some time and effort into their shaving preparation. Not only does it contain a professional synthetic bristle brush (it's hard to tell the difference between this one and real badger hair brushes), it also comes with a 50ml tube of their shave cream which again is actually well worth a look.
The Real Shaving Company Shaving Brush Collection
The Real Shaving Co Men's Travel Essentials
Second up is the Men's Travel Essentials, only £5.99 from Boots here. It contains steps one, two and three from the range with all of the products coming in travel friendly 50ml tubes.

So, the three products are:

  • Daily Face Scrub
  • Shave Cream
  • Moisturiser
All three products are good value for money and the pack is a must have for the frequent flyer/traveller (no more ditching products at airport security)

Barber Pro Shave Mug
With a variety of shaving brushes on hand now in my bathroom for yonks (read a while) I have struggled to actually use them properly, either rubbing the brush into a bar of soap or squeezing an assortment of product onto the brush. Neither approach has really been ideal, but lo, what is this, a funky little enamel coated cup to finally end my half arsed approach to applying shaving cream!

At just £8.95 here, this mug is not only a bit of a looker (I think it's cool) it's easy to wash out and let's me mix my shave cream properly before spreading it across my face with a brush.
Barber Pro Shave Mug
This would make an affordable secret Santa, a cute little stocking filler or quirky gift.

Two products from the Big Boy range in focus today, with more to come in the New Year. Big Boy are a new brand to me but I've been using them on and off over the last few months. The brand originates in Sicily. They say that their products combine rich natural ingredients like Sicilian olive and almond oil with bees wax and shea oil create superior hair and skin products.

First up is their Soothing Drops, which cost £24.95 from their website here. They smell amazing and are applied with a dropper into the hand before applying to your beard. I love the fragrance, it's like a clean, sterile smell and it doesn't interfere with any aftershave or cologne applied after using it. The emulsion drops are absorbed by the beard and skin quickly and since using this I've found a marked decrease in the number of acne outbreaks under my facial foliage.
Big Boy Soothing Drops
Second up is their Moisturising Cream, with a SPF20 and hefty £36.95 price tag comes in a 50ml tub. Again it has the fragrance of the soothing drops and despite the price tag it happens to go a long way, even when used on a face as large as mine. Not only does this reduce the damage to your skin from sunlight I have found that it does help to keep my skin feeling and looking more hydrated - the harsh cold weather has form for drying out my skin but this acts as a kind of rescue remedy! Top stuff and with this you get what you pay for.

Men-U
What about a seven piece all you need travel bag and essential grooming products? Well, over at the Mankind site you can pick up everything you need as a kind of grooming grab bag for just £22.49 here
Christmas 2016: Gifts for a Bearded Bloke
I'm a big fan of their products and have used a large amount of the range before, but in this gift set you get to play with:
  • 100ml of Daily Refresh Shampoo
  • 100ml of Shower Gel
  • 15ml of Shave Cream
  • 15ml of Healthy Face Wash
  • 15ml Matt 'Skin Refresh' Gel
  • 15ml of Liquifflex
Before you ask where the seventh product is, its the actual toiletry bag. In the past I've used the shampoo and shower gel and been impressed, but for me, the Skin Refresh gel was a real eye opener that soothed my skin after shaving.

Cornerstone shaving box
How about a monogrammed razor and enough product to keep your face as smooth as a peach? Well, you could take a peek at the Cornerstone subscription shaving box. It comes with a cool blade shaft, enough razors to keep you going for well over a month but best of all, it comes with one of the best face scrubs ever, excellent shaving cream and a lovely cooling balm for when you've finished.
 Cornerstone shaving box
At £30 for the monogrammed razor and six blades, face scrub, shave gel and post shave balm it is well worth the cash. You can read my review of the box here, or just pop over to the Cornerstone site here and take a look at the options available (you can tailor the box to suit your bearded bloke's shave routine).

This Bearded Life
Yes, a shameless plug for a recent post, but I genuinely did enjoy reading this book by Carles Sune. I'm not one for endless reading about grooming, I find it all very repetitive if I'm honest but I did find this a page turner. The interesting facts, history of the beard and quirky illustrations captured my attention, and that's hard to do. At £12.99 you can't go wrong. You have the chance to win one of two copies in a previous post here (until midnight on 14 December).

Ted's Grooming Room gift vouchers
I've visited three of Ted's Grooming Rooms over the last two years and each time I've found the experience to be truly uplifting. I'd strongly recommend a visit for a haircut, to have your beard trimmed or removed or to just shape your brows. It's a great grooming experience and you can pick up gift vouchers here.
Ted's Grooming Room gift vouchers
The 'Full Ted' service that I usually opt for is available for £48.50 and includes a haircut with a clean shave or beard design. A few pictures of my before and after visits are below to show how they really can transform even the most neglected (grooming wise) into something that looks sharp and on point.

Before and after my latest visit, this time to the new branch by St Paul's
So, there you have it, my selection of possible gifts for the bearded bloke in your life. There are so many things that I could have added, like the amazing Oil Can Grooming Iron Horse Beard Oil (£24)Jamie Stevens MR Beard Oil (£10) or Citrus Wood by Yardley London (£19.99), but alas I didn't want to overload you dear readers with too many choices. Needless to say, they all come highly recommended from me.

I do hope you find this useful in your quest for gift ideas, and please do let me know what you think to my selections, or indeed the products if you choose to buy them for yourself, a friend or a relative.

FASHION: Atom Retro - Retro, Mod & Indie Clothing

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by Atom Retro asking if I would like to take a peek at their website and choose an item of clothing to style for this here blog. After deleting my initial response of “are you saying I dress like I’m stuck in the 1960s” I took a peek and was instantly hooked on the sheer amount of clothing available for both men and women and how reasonable the pricing was.

For the sake of transparency, I was gifted with my choice but as ever, I'm being incredibly objective when it comes to sharing my thoughts.

Lounging in the library at work
So, who are Atom Retro? This is what they say about themselves over the site here:

'Based in the UK and launched in 2004, Atom Retro has quickly become the one-stop shop for every sixties fan, retro lover or heritage connoisseur looking for authentic, high quality and original clothing.

We specialise in stocking iconic heritage brands such as Baracuta, John Smedley, Original Penguin, Farah Vintage, Ben Sherman and Gabicci Vintage – but we also have an eye for new and original independent designers and brands with a Retro or Indie edge such as Madcap England, Common People and Gonsalves & Hall.

Atom Retro was inspired by the Carnaby Street boutiques of the Sixties – recreated here online for the contemporary era. Reflecting classic, timeless style with Fashion that will live forever.'

They have everything you could possibly need to pull together an alternative look that will make you stand out in a crowd or simply state your own style in a unique and interesting way, without breaking the bank. Being a little conservative I opted for the Penny Dot Lane MADCAP ENGLAND Retro 60s Mod Shirt that sells for £34.99. A reasonable amount I think for a well made quality shirt. Normally when looking at casual shirts I can spend anything up to £100 so just £34.99 is not something to be sniffed at.

Check out that retro old school phone!
When I showed my better half my choice I could tell from the look on her face that this wasn't something she would pick for me but it has grown on her and she now likes the outfit when I combine it with dark blue jeans and my biker boots or my brown Chelsea boots from Chatham Marine.

I’ve worn the shirt twice now to work and I can categorically say I’ve never received so many positive comments about it – people love the shirt and the look, which is a shift away from my usual all black outfits for work! Navy is the new black people….Strangely, I wasn't even wearing the shirt to work today and someone commented on how cool it looked while sat in a meeting.

Atom Retro don't just limit themselves to clothes either, you can also pick up some amazing retro stuff like this vintage record player for £169, this Dunlop flap satchel bag for £15 or these Winklepicker Chelsea boots for £89.99.
Atom Retro - Retro, Mod & Indie Clothing
Atom Retro - well and truly bookmarked and somewhere I'll be shopping from again and again. As I've said above, I'm being objective and there are lots of retro clothes on the site that I personally could not see myself wearing, in fact I just enjoyed looking at the wide range of sometimes bizarre clothes available. Go and take a look, I think you'll find something that appeals to you.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

What do you think to my choice and the outfit?

*thanks Robbie for taking the pics!

Gentleman's Gift Guide

As well as talking about Advent calendars for men (my post here) it goes without saying that there will be a few gift guides making an appearance on my blog in the coming weeks, after all Chrimbo is just around the corner. Whilst writing them I find them great for brainstorming gifts for friends and family but also to see if there is any really cool stuff out there.

This gift guide is designed for perhaps the Dad, Grandad and older male out there and perhaps the one I struggle with the most. Chums has an array of gifts for men and women across a broad spectrum of categories such as clothing and footwear to household items, grooming and even jewellery.

Gentleman Gift Guide

Salon Pro nose and beard trimmer - Ideal for trimming sideburns, beards, moustaches, eyebrow hair, nose, ears – the list goes on! Complete with steel blade, interchangeable nasal clipper, trimmer heads and stand. For £14.99 this is great value for money and I am sure a must have gift for most men!

Black Long Sleeve Hoodie - If I am lounging around the house then I like to be comfortable and I am talking lounge pants and a hoodie, something snug and warm.  This black long sleeve slim fit ribbed hoodie is perfect and it costs just £38.

Classic Razor - I am currently obsessed with these, so it is only fitting that it makes it into a gift guide. This one is beautifully made in rust-free chrome plated brass designed dome shaped top - for effective close shave! Supplied in a smart presentation case and complete with 5 free blades. At £14.99 this is an amazing gift.

Radio Controlled Battery Watch - This watch comes with a 10 year guarantee and is described as being a 'Super accurate Radio controlled timing which never needs adjusting'. It features a white face with gold effect bezel and a quality tan, 100% leather strap. At £59.99 it isn't overly expensive but looks pretty good.

Pegasus Fisherman Rib Sweater - One item you can guarantee hearing Dad say is 'Oh just a jumper will be fine' well this one is perfect because as a Classic fishermans knit sweater with contrast neck and cuffs, it is perfect for the would be Fisherman! At £25 each and with a range of 4 different colours, these are a bargain.

Cotswold Fully Waterproof Boot - Again as a fisherman, waterproof footwear is always helpful before dragging on those Waders. These Inspired by the wet conditions of the Cotswold terrains this UK label have now released the Castor weather boot with twin touch fastening straps. The waterproof upper and easy clean rubber galosh helps keep feet dry. Crafted with a textile upper and rubber galosh designed to resist water from penetrating the footwell. Priced at £45 they look like great value for money.

I hope that if you are struggling with what to buy any of the men in your life for birthdays, Christmas or any other celebration, I have given you some food for thought with this post.

Bulldog Skincare For Men Gift Collection

A Bulldog is not just for Christmas…but it’s a great start. That's what the marketing blurb for the Bulldog Skincare for Men Christmas Gift Collection shouts out straight away, and after receiving two to try out, I'm inclined to agree, they're not just for Christmas but all year round.

Bulldog Skincare For Men Gift Collection

Bulldog Skincare For Men Gift Collection

I'm a bit of a Bulldog Skincare freak, I love their moisturiser (still puzzled why I've never written about it) so when these two gift sets popped through the door (read wife walked to the sorting office to pick up) it really was like Christmas morning, and I still have a wry smile now, some weeks later.

So, award winning skincare brand Bulldog Skincare For Men has launched five new gift sets that will bring seasonal cheer. With a brilliant selection of their products available in each gift, and at what I would call massively affordable prices you can do a lot, and I do mean a lot worse when weighing up what to buy the bloke in your life this year.

Available from Boots, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, the range offers a choice of stocking fillers, secret Santa gifts and ‘proper presents’.

Man Up (£6, yes, just £6 from Boots)

Now this is by far and away a great little gift and would be perfect for Secret Santa - not too pricey, but actually not just a great grooming product, but the tin is also a money box with a nice opening in the lid.

Bulldog Skincare For Men Gift Collection

This is what the marketing blurb says about this gift set:

'The Bulldog Man Up Sensitive Moisturiser Tin is a great man’s gift this Christmas. This set contains Bulldog Sensitive Moisturiser, which is specially formulated with 2 essential oils, green tea, green algae, konjac mannan and vitamin E to help rehydrate sensitive skin. These powerful ingredients can help revive and rehydrate the skin. Plus, this moisturiser absorbs quickly and won't leave your face and hands oily or greasy after use.'

I really do have affection for this moisturiser, it is brilliant when i shave regularly and it doesn't inflame my skin further, even if I shave in a rush and have razor burn. It smells wonderful to boot - fresh, clean with a bit of bite from the tea notes, this ticks all the right boxes.

It's absorbed into the face quickly, doesn't leave the face looking greasy and best of all, after I started using this, after a week my skin did feel softer, smoother and looked incredibly hydrated.

Pardon the pun, but this is the dog's b******s.....

‘The Kennel’ (£12)

In a neat, and clean looking presentation box, and with a budget price tag this is the perfect alternative to the usual Lynx guff gift sets that get thrown around at this time of the year (in laws, family and friends take note, I despise Lynx gift sets)

Bulldog Skincare For Men Gift Collection

Bulldog Skincare For Men Gift Collection

This is what they say about this gift set in the marketing blurb:

'The Kennel contains a trio of Bulldog products; Original Face Wash, Original Face Scrub and Original Moisturiser bedded down in a fun presentation box. The recipient of this gift is guaranteed to love the superb skincare results of the products as well as the iconic bulldog ‘at one with nature’ on the box.'

Again, while I can't argue with the benefits that come from using the moisturiser, my personal favourite from this gift set has to be the face scrub. It smells lovely, not a hint of any chemical aroma and the scrub is really gentle and feels so natural as it grinds off the daily build up of free radicals (ooh, check me out, I do of course mean dirt and pollution).

Combining the face wash, scrub and moisturiser for the last five days and I seem to have developed a glow. Now that has nothing to do with me entering into the Christmas spirit early, and everything to do with these great products.

So, considering the price these gift sets represent excellent value for money. They are well presented, do what they say they will do, and do so with no fuss or drama. For this I am eternally grateful. Still not convinced? Well, I give up!

Need a gift for your fella this Christmas? These would make great stocking fillers and you get to support a British business in the process. It's a win all around.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Finally, Hector wants to know why you haven't already gone off to pick up your own Bulldog Gift Set!

Crabtree & Evelyn Shave Soap in a Bowl - Moroccan Myrrh

What do you buy the guy that has everything? Personally I would say a nicer Bvlgari watch but I’d be likely to be punched square in the face by my other half. In the interests of matrimonial bliss instead, and as a second choice you couldn’t do better than Crabtree & Evelyn Shave Soap in a Bowl - Moroccan Myrrh as a stocking filler, or hell, it‘s that snazzy, as just a nice gift for someone who is, or should be into their grooming routine.

Crabtree & Evelyn Shave Soap in a Bowl - Moroccan Myrrh

As a firm convert to shaving soap I had been expecting this to come in paper packaging (I find that incredibly irritating for shaving soap) so when it arrived from their lovely PR people I was shocked by how much it weighed when there was apparently only 100g of the soap - had I developed a muscle wasting disease overnight (not a stretch of the imagination with my health history)? No, much better, as soon as I read the front that it was soap in a bowl I could wait to take a peek.

It just looks so cool - this is something I’d have on display in the bathroom constantly, not hidden away in the cupboard (like the other soggy wrapped shaving soaps I use). It oozes class and the bowl comes with a handy lid - personally I like to leave the lid off for a while so that the fragrance fills the bathroom. Ah, the fragrance, yes……

Crabtree & Evelyn Shave Soap in a Bowl - Moroccan Myrrh
Crabtree & Evelyn Shave Soap in a Bowl - Moroccan Myrrh
Crabtree & Evelyn Shave Soap in a Bowl - Moroccan Myrrh

This smells sooooooo good it’s fine…..OK, a bit more depth you say? Well, most shaving soaps that I’ve come across tend to be either Old Spice replicas or they dominate the room with their fragrance either leaving you gagging or thinking you can smell it lingering on the skin for the rest of the day. Not this, it has a very subtle aroma, oriental with a hint of spice that gives it a warmth on the nose without being overpowering. The bergamot acts as a wonderful balance to the spicy Myrrh. It is a perfect blend and I personally was impressed, having smelt a Myrrh based fragrance once and being repulsed I find myself strangely attracted to this.

This is what that say about the soap at the Crabtree & Evelyn website here:

‘There’s something quite reassuring about shave soap. Our rich-lathering, dermatologist-approved Moroccan Myrrh Shave Soap updates this classic with an intriguing, exotic fragrance. An experience that gentlemen across all ages can enjoy.

Contains skin-conditioning Moroccan Myrrh extract.’

A quick swirl around the bowl with a damp shaving brush and this lathers up brilliantly, although it feels a bit of a shame to ruin the way it looks with the branding on the top. Rich, creamy and long lasting the lather here doesn’t start to evaporate off your face the moment you move on with the brush. Reassuringly thick I have to say it doesn’t seem to clog my safety razor, something I have found when using gels in the past.

With a touch more oil in this I think the glide would be perfect as the razor passes over the skin, but as it is I have to say it’s good, not great, but good. Maybe I’ve turned into a shaving snob, I’m not sure, but after using a few creams with Argan Oil I’ve found there to be no razor burn or irritation. Using this I feared the worst, but it wasn’t as bad as I feared.

I had a few nicks here and there, but in terms of razor burn and irritation there was none. The nicks probably did come from me thinking so much about how the soap had lathered rather than concentrating on the razor blade running millimetres from my jugular.

At $25 for this lovely bowl and enough of the soap to keep you shaving for months on end then I think you can do a lot worse, I know I have in the past. This not only looks uber cool (I know it’s not cool to use the term uber anymore) in the bathroom, it smells divine and lathers up better than about 99% of the soaps I’ve tried. As I said at the start, this would make a perfect stocking filler or just a random gift - did anyone say Secret Santa (too early?!?!?)?

David Hampton Leather Coat Wallet

No, I’m not breaking out into song, but……last Christmas (crap Wham reference there……)….I reviewed my current wallet as a possible gift idea for him - it was an expensive number (not as expensive as the Mont Blanc one I managed to lose) and one that has served me well. But, a certain little darling of a wallet has arrived courtesy of David Hampton - step forward stage left, the David Hampton Leather Coat Wallet in Malvern.

David Hampton Leather Coat Wallet

Well hello……

David Hampton Leather Coat Wallet

At £80 for a wallet this clearly is a luxury item but it does ooze class, and it gives off that reassuringly classy leather aroma.

Now personally I’ve always been one for a rather chunky yet bulky wallets that fit neatly in the back pocket of a pair of jeans kind of guy but the chance to try out the longer wallet version was too good to pass up - so yes, this was a sample from the company, but I promise to be objective.

So, who are ya? Who are ya? This is what they say over on their website here:

'David Hampton, makers of superior leather goods since 1989: beautifully crafted wallets, purses, travel good and luxury leather gifts for men and women. David Hampton offers a selection of luxury ladies' purses, gentleman's wallets and business card holders, travel accessories and fine desk accessories created and available exclusively with a host of premium quality leather good to suit every taste.'

The wallet came gift wrapped, and as always, like a child I got giddy as I unwrapped the box and then removed the wallet from the dust sleeve (dust sleeve, yeah, a bit too classy for my blood). Loved it on first sight, but that just increased as I ran my hands over the outside before running my fingers across the lining, which is actually Champagne

With eight card slots, four pockets for cash (three of which will invariably be taken up by receipts) and a ticket pocket this can hold a mass of cards and cash. Had I not managed to lose all my cards on a recent trip up to Manchester (slow clap for Shawcross) the images would probably demonstrate this, but I’ve tried to show how many cards etc it can take using what I managed to retain while dodging protestors (and police), crawling from bar to bar or scaling a 6 foot (spiked) fence……

David Hampton Leather Coat Wallet

The neat David Hampton logo is embossed and incredibly discreet - I actually didn’t notice it at first.

David Hampton Leather Coat Wallet

I’m really pleased with my new wallet - it is perfect that use when out in a trench coat, blazer or lounge suit and has already drawn comments from friends (the only printable one is that it’s way too posh for me). At £80 I personally haven’t seen anything of this quality available which also has the functionality and looks to rival it. A perfect gift at any time, but now that Christmas is getting closer you could do so much worse than picking this up as a stocking filler for your fella.
