SuperFish Stiffish Cream by Fish Soho

Do you ever use something for so long that its just there and becomes part of your routine? For me, SuperFish Stiffish Cream by Fish Soho is currently that product, and one that I have used for months without ever thinking about writing about it. In fact, it wasn’t until I wrote up my thoughts on GO24-7 Texture Paste that I realised I hadn’t imparted with my wisdom.

So here it is….

Any regular readers will know that I’ve tried out a few Fish Soho products since I started up the blog and while these little beauties find their way into my collection thanks to their lovely PR people. This doesn’t mean they get gushing reviews of how much I love their products, in fact looking back I have to say it’s probably been 50/50 when trying out their hair and body products.

SuperFish Stiffish Cream probably falls into the gushing category as to be frank I love it, the fragrance, the texture, the ease of application and most of all, the hold that it offers to varying lengths of hair.

The cream itself is white in colour and has a fresh clean smell to it. You can rub your fingertips through the pot and in an instant have enough of the cream to style. Rather than being a but tough like wax, paste or clay the cream is really pliable between the fingertips which mean that when it comes to applying it the chances of breaking into a sweat are as likely as Gary Barlow from Take That winning Taxpayer of the Year 2014.

When my hair is around an inch in length I like to apply the cream to dry hair - it means that as it dries it leaves my hair with a matte finish but with hints of a shine as my spikes stay rigidly in place for well over 10 hours. As the length increases personally I switch to applying it just after stepping out of the shower. As my longer hair is slightly damp it spreads the cream more evenly from root to tip.

There is no need to blow dry a style either which cuts down on much needed time when getting ready to go to work or go out in an evening. This dries really quickly and while you are waiting there is zero risk of the style falling out (unless you go and stand in a wind tunnel) - as soon as it is applied each strand of hair takes on the consistency and pliability of a pipe cleaner. A joy to style with and it’s rare that I say that.

Once dried the dreaded white flakes are nowhere to be seen so no need to be self-conscious which I find a bonus.

Fish Soho haircare products are reasonably priced for what you get - I’ve been using a 100ml tub for months now and it has probably another month of daily use left in it.

If you are looking for a hair styling product that is good value for money, a breeze to style with and has exceptional hold then you can do a lot worse than Superfish Stiffish Cream.

Fat Fish Pliable Hold Easy Sculpting Stick

Having been a Wella fanatic for years I was well and truly converted to Fish products after my visit to Amsterdam.

Taking #hairontour with the SuperFish Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty and nearly being washed away by the rain made me change brands. The hold was fantastic.

After I had sung the praises of the product I was asked to try Fat Fish Pliable Hold Easy Sculpting Stick. This is how a 75ml, 2.5fl.oz stick fell into my hands.

You can expect to pay £7 for the stick. When it arrived I took one look at the tube and thought it looked like an old school roll on deodorant rather than something for my hair.

First of all, the marketing blurb,

‘Perfect for that ‘just out of bed look’, use Fatfish to give a textured pliable hold with control and shine. Designed for short and mid-length hairstyles, it allows you to apply a controlled amount of wax onto your head without getting messy hands. Fatfish uses natural Candelilla Beeswax so you can easily mould, shape and define your style.’

At the moment my hair is around 3 inches in length - I’d consider this mid-length.

After washing my hair I tried applying using small circular motions as directed. It was evident that wax was being rubbed onto the strand of the hair and I didn’t have to push to hard. A fair amount of wax accumulated.

I found that due to the length of my hair I had to use my hands to style the spikes and I did get messy hands, something that the stick is designed to avoid.

However, the hold was great and as it’s a wax there was no residue in my hair of those ghastly white flakes I find on my shoulder later in the day as gels wear off.

Does it offer control? Hell yeah. It controls for hours on end, in fact after applying in morning at 8 a.m. it was still holding firm at 3 a.m. the following morning.

Does it offer shine? In my opinion, not really unless you really massage the wax in for a few minutes. If you do spend the time, and I’d say around 15 minutes massaging it in yes you would get a better shine but this isn’t a look I’m after.

If you are looking for a messy bed-head look and have short hair, really short then this is for you. It would also suit a sort of Gareth Bale style (he’s a footballer for Real Madrid).

Since I first tried this I’ve had my hair cut back to around an inch and it does offer a great hold and texture for short hair.

Looking at the wax as a whole it looks good but I have never really been a big fan of wax and I’m not sure if that’s swaying my opinion. This product sits there with TX wax from my teenage years, it does the job but only until my hair, which is quite heavy reaches 2 inches in length. It’s good with certain styles but I personally like a product that is suitable for all lengths - yes, I know, high maintenance!

It is easy to apply to short hair and with short hair it will be easy to style. If that’s your bag then this is for you as applying it couldn’t be simpler and is seems to last for ages. I never notice the stick getting smaller.

RECOMMENDED for short, under an inch hairstyles.

SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty!

I recently gave my thoughts and that of my hair on the Soho Fishshape hair texturising cream. The tiny pot that I had was really good when my hair was short but I needed something a little more robust for a weekend trek to Amsterdam and the wind and rain that had been forecast. As my hair as grown in length quite a lot to approx. 4 inches in length the cream was not an option.

Step forward SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty.

#hairontour was born to document my thoughts on SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty and throughout the weekend I tweeted its performance as my hair took a pounding from sideways rain and gale force winds.

The putty is an off white colour and sits solidly in the pot. It’s a little harder than Vaseline in texture but quite easy to scoop up onto fingers. It’s softer than the clay which I find an absolute pain to try and apply. I’ve attached a few of the images from the #hairontour posts to show the process of styling and the results after a few hours.

I personally find it easier to spread through my hair if done while still a little damp. By rubbing the putty between my hands and fingers before spreading all over my hair it takes just seconds before each strand of hair starts to harden.

Even though it has a dense texture and is white in colour it blends in really quickly – you don’t get clumps stuck in your hair that make it look like a seagull has made a ‘healthy deposit’.

Styling is really easy. That is all.

After wearing for hours on end I am always please to report an absence of any white flakes. It’s one of my massive bug bears when it comes to using styling mousse and gel. No sign of them here so no self-conscious flicking of the shoulders throughout the day.

So, with the #hairontour I styled at the ungodly hour of 6.30 in the morning and headed off to the airport. By 5 in the afternoon and after several litres of lager my hair was still the same. No movement at all – and then the rain came.

I’m from Manchester – I’m conditioned for rain but the rain that fell on Friday night was borderline painful when it hit my head. At times, with the gusting wind (so strong it nearly knocked me off my feet) it was coming in sideways. I was drenched from head to toe and my hair took a pounding. Had I been wearing gel it would have been washed away in an instant but SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty held firm. I’ve no idea how, but the spikes in my hair stayed upright and I struggled to get my body to do the same.

At £6.12 for a large pot it seems more expensive than other hair products on the market but don’t be fooled. A tub at £6.12 will deliver better value for money than run of the mill hair gel. I’m a fan of Shockwaves Ultra Hold gel due the level of hold, but my tub of SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty is set to last probably the same length of time that I go through 4 tubes.

SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty not only delivers the same level of hold as ultra-strength, it’s easy to style hair and it performs better after getting wet.

Speaking from experience, on Friday night I resembled a drowned rat walking the streets of Amsterdam – the only thing that made me resemble human was the fact that my hair remained the same!

By midnight on each evening, SuperFish Fishpaste Hardcore Hold Matt Effect Putty was the only thing left standing. It took on the wind and rain, and it won.
