Ted's Grooming Room - Step 03 Post Shave Balm

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (well Enfield in London) I started to write up what I thought of the Ted’s Grooming Room range by Ted Baker, starting as you would expect with Steps 01 and 02.

I’ve had Step 03: Post Shave Balm now for nearly twelve months and as the tube comes to the end of its life it dawned on me that I hadn’t committed my thoughts (my thoughts should always be committed, usually under the Metal Health Act) to the internet about it. Disaster (not).

You can read up on the earlier steps in the Ted’s Grooming Room by clicking on the links below (if you so wish):

Step 01: Face Scrub
Step 02: Shave Gel

150ml of the post shave balm is available here for £9, and back in the day, when first writing about male grooming products I would have thought this expensive, however over a few short months, and after realising how expensive some products (that don’t work) cost, I’ve adjusted my position. It’s a reasonable price and if you read on, I’ll tell you whether you should part with your cash.

So, what do Ted Baker say about the product? Well, they talk like it’s some new form of Anthrax about to be unleashed onto enemy troops! Seriously, this is what they say:

‘For a moisturising finish like no other, deploy Ted’s best kept secret weapon. The soothing eucalyptus will have dry skin waving the white flag.’

While I may have had this for twelve months I have been using a host of other products during that time. Realistically, this would last for around six months if used three times a week. Now that’s still not bad, and even if you don’t get around to using it in that time it doesn’t seem to diminish when left on the shelf.

I played with a few filters on this shot!

With sensitive skin around my face that is prone to irritation after shaving the prospect of something that could cool potential razor burn was welcomed with open arms. After shaving I regularly get a burn and my skin dries out so quickly once the beard is gone. Anything that can help is a bonus.

First impressions have stuck with this one, I love the smell of eucalyptus and continue to do so. I can literally stand and just sniff my hands the fragrance is so strong and rich. The white balm has a crème like consistency and it was so thick I struggled to comprehend how it would be absorbed. Particularly as after squeezing some out onto the back of my hand it doesn’t seem to be absorbed into the skin at all!

A quick rub and hey presto, a 50 pence sized amount of the balm, rubbed between palms and then applied to the face was enough for me. The fears of it just sitting on the surface were unfounded, as soon as pressure was applied it soaked in so quickly it was hard to keep track of the areas of my face I had already covered.

Once on the skin the balm does have an immediate cooling effect, and the fragrance remains strong. The first time I used this I applied a second coat so to speak and this again was absorbed really quickly. While there was no tingling sensation I usually experience as the razor burn cools this did settle my skin down, and do it quickly.

After using a dodgy shave cream and shaving down a quite long beard I had a break out of red, itchy and blotch skin around my jaw line. After using this the itching and redness subsided within around thirty minutes. That made me a very happy man. There is little more irritating than a sore and itchy face after shaving.

Unlike some post shave balms and moisturisers this didn’t leave my skin feeling greasy or looking as though I had been varnished. If anything it helps to keep my skin feeling soft and smooth to the touch and for that I am thankful.

Yes, my tube is now empty, and The Last Post is playing in my head (see how I’m staying with a kind of military feel, this is gold people)

When you consider that it is only £8 for a product that will last for ages, smells amazing and helps calm skin down after shaving then you can’t really argue. It’s great value for money from Ted and despite the weaponised marketing blurb it does what it says it will. Go on, if you suffer after shaving you could take a closer look at Step 03: Post Shave Balm.

Burt’s Bees - Therapeutic Bath Crystals

When it comes to stress relief (no rude comments please) nothing can beat a long soak in the bath, and to say that my bathroom resembles an online boutique of lotions and potions is something of any understatement. Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Bath Crystals have been a welcome addition to my baths for well over three months, mainly because they contain Eucalyptus oil that helps open up my airways and helps me breath more easily.

As a bit of background before I unleash my opinion of the product I should point out that I have serious sinus problems and a degenerative lung condition (not helped by my addiction to the demon weed - that’s cigarettes for the avoidance of doubt). Anything that helps me take in air by clearing my sinuses or chest is most welcome.

The salt crystals are infused with essentials oils and a little goes a long way - just two tablespoons of the crystals are needed, thrown in casually as the bath is filled with hot water.

Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Bath Crystals - the crystals

Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Bath Crystals - the crystals remind me of rock salt

Eucalyptus is released as soon as the crystals come into contact with the warm water. What I found weird was that after around five minutes of the water running hints of lemon started to blend with the Eucalyptus - awesome, I love the smell of lemon! Oh my lord, the fragrance is so warming and the impact on my chest was almost immediate. When I first started using the crystals I freely admit I was struggling to breathe at all - inhalers, steroids and antibiotics were being popped at an alarming rate with no relief. While using the crystals didn’t and would never cure my problems they did provide relief and that was erm…….a relief.

450g for £10.99 - unfiltered photograph of Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Bath Crystals

Now this is what Burt’s Bees say about the crystals:

‘Strenuous exercise can be great for the body, but hard on muscles. Indulge in a warm bath of salt crystals and essential oils after a workout to help release the lactic acid that builds up during physical activity causing muscle ache. The penetrating action of Burt's Bees' all natural Therapeutic Bath Crystals essential oils helps stimulate the elimination of waste products, helping muscles feel as good as new.’

In terms of soothing aching muscles I have to say that I do come out of the bath feeling more relaxed and less tense, but this could be down to the long soak in the warm bath.

450g tube of the bath crystals will set you back £10.99 from here. Now considering that I have been showering in the morning and bathing every night for months these still haven’t run out. These crystals represent excellent value for money.

*Digression warning* I am a big fan of Calvin Klein Eternity Bath Salts - not only do they turn the water a stunning deep blue they leave my skin looking hydrated, feeling soft and smooth and smelling beautifully of Eternity. While Burt’s Bees crystals don’t leave the skin smelling as great, the results are equally as appealing. Skin is left feeling soft and smooth, the essential oils are absorbed really quickly and even when dried off completely I find that my skin has a wonderful glow.

Add in the fact that the steam, infused with Eucalyptus and hints of lemon clears my sinuses and helps loosen any build up in my lungs and I’m a very happy camper.

If I had to choose between my favourite CK bath salts/crystals and Burt’s Bees I’d struggle pick. If bathing before a night out I would go with CK, but for more regular use it has to be Burt’s Bees Therapeutic Bath Crystals.

Lacoste Booster

Any regular reader will know I have a slight problem with aftershaves - I can’t help but pick them up, try them and buy them. It costs me a fortune, but it’s probably one of the safest addictions to have right?

Lacoste Booster didn’t fall into my collection through the standard routes, my brother actually left a bottle after staying over. It sat in my bathroom for months until I actually smelt it out of curiosity! The reason it had never aroused the urge to smell it previously is due to the extremely ugly packaging! The bottle looks ugly, cheap and very tacky!

Lacoste Booster

You have to see it first hand to really appreciate how nasty it is. A green bottle coated in white plastic with a white plastic pump spray. Classy, I think not. I have never seen this on the shelves of perfume/aftershave counters and I’d be inclined to steer well clear as it gives off so many ’jog on’ signals I can’t understand why anyone would go for it.

This fragrance was launched in 1996 and is aimed at the sporty, adventurous type of man who wants to feel manly but pleasant at the same time. Taking a peek at the Lacoste website will throw reams of information relating to the history of the company and what this fragrance will do for you.

The notes to Lacoste Booster state that this fragrance has hints of Menthol, Nutmeg, Eucalyptus and Lavender. Taking those main ingredients into account you would think this aftershave would have a very fresh, sweet smelling aroma with wooden undertones. You’d be wrong!

The first time I sprayed this onto my face I gagged! Although I hadn’t sprayed any in my mouth I could actually taste the fragrance it was so strong! This wasn’t a fruity, sweet smell. It was heavy and extremely overpowering. It was difficult to actually distinguish any particular smells at all.

Obviously panic set in. I stank! I was late for work and I literally hummed to high heaven of this stuff. Rather than taking another shower and changing, I headed off to work with rather paranoid thoughts running through my mind. Surprisingly, given 20 minutes, the fragrance changed dramatically.

The overpowering odour had calmed down and certain smells became evident. The Lavender in particular was most noticeable, and rather than being heavy on my nose, it was bearable and in all honesty, quite refreshing for such an earthy aftershave.

After a few hours of wear, the smell changed again. The ingredients although surprising combined well to give a heavy citrus smell.

Marketed as a manly aftershave it did have that rough around the edges smell, but with only a small amount of time was needed for this to transform into an elegant, subtle fragrance that drew compliments from young and old alike.

Given that the fragrance starts off being so powerful and heavy, only a little is needed to give you a great feel. Personally, I would recommend this to men aged 30+, and for use really during the day.

It’s nothing special and if I had a choice, I wouldn’t use this as a pulling fragrance as there are much better aftershaves on the market that will bring the ladies flocking. This isn’t your young mans fragrance, if I had to sum it up, I’d say it was an upmarket version of Old Spice. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but you’re not going to knock people out with the stench.

The cheapest I have seen Lacoste Booster was online at just over £10 for a 50ml bottle. Bearing in mind only a tiny bit is required this is great value for money. Not only is this really cheap, the smell lingers for an absolute age still being evident after 10 hours. Lacoste Booster is too heavy a fragrance for me.

Personally, I would only buy this if I was watching the pennies.

I prefer to pay that little bit extra and get a light, fruity sweet smelling fragrance from one of the more established fashion/fragrance houses. If you like/enjoy Old Spice, Brut or Fahrenheit this would suit you down to the ground for daywear, and daywear only.
