Konjac Sponge with Bamboo Charcoal

What is this I see before me? Well, it’s a sponge, no, I’m not referring to the drinking prowess of one of my friends, I’m actually talking about the amazing Konjac Sponge, a 100% natural vegetable fibre shaving sponge with Bamboo Charcoal.

It was just after I had posted about a shaving soap on Twitter when the company messaged me back to say that the sponge worked well when applying said shaving soap. I was sceptical, but my other half mentioned that she had used the Konjac sponge in the past with great results. When they asked if I would like to have a try I of course ripped their arm off and was pleasantly surprised by what arrived.

The sponge itself is actually a lot smaller than I was expecting - with hindsight I think I may have confused sponge with loofah, but that’s besides the point. The sponge can be bought direct from the Konjac Sponge peeps (link below) for just £8.99 so it’s not one of those products that requires a re-mortgage or selling your children into slavery (or in my case, my cats).

This is what the marketing blurb promises over at the Konjac Sponge website here:

‘Our Bamboo Charcoal and Konjac sponge offers an amazing cleansing and/or shaving experience.

The cellular structure of the sponge creates the perfect lather for the ultimate shave. Compared by experts to a badger shaving brush, as having the same results. Meaning our vegan and cruelty free sponge is the perfect badger friendly alternative.

The addition of the antioxidant ingredient; bamboo charcoal ensures a deep cleanse to eliminate blackheads and dirt, whilst absorbing the excess oil often trapped around the facial hair follicles.

The genuine Gentleman’s choice.

Approximately 8cm in diameter, this sponge sits neatly in the hand and the shaving bowl.’

As I have been growing a full beard for the last three weeks I started using this as a way of cleaning my beard and making sure that my flowing (read gnarly) beard doesn’t start to give off any form of odour. It is now a case of step aside L’Oreal Men Expert Face & Stubble wash, I need something a little more hardcore now. When using as part of a cleansing regime it was handy - it retains an abrasive feel that does gently remove grime and any build up of free radicals (read pollution). You can’t argue with that, but for me, I just wanted to see if this would make a good alternative to using a badger hair shaving brush.

Well, I’ve got to say, it is impressive - the fact that it has a slightly rough feel and natural fibres mean that the shaving soap is almost drawn to the sponge. It picks up the shaving soap as you run it around the bowl so easily unlike using a brush. Personally I find that a lot of badger hair is lost due to having to apply pressure, but that‘s something that is now consigned to history for me.

Once on the sponge the shaving soap lathered up brilliantly and it was as though I was applying shaving soap but also undertaking a bit of a facial deep clean! Brilliant.  Personally there were a few highlights when using the sponge:

  • No stray badger hairs stuck in the razor as shaving
  • My face felt cleaner after using it both as a cleanser and also as a shaving aid
  • It was easy to spread the shaving soap across my face
  • It dried out really quickly after being rinsed off

This was much easier than using a shaving brush, and for the price I would urge any user of shaving soap to pick up one for yourself. The are fairly cheap, and deliver everything that they promise to do.

FORGET THE REST, TRY THE BEST
